The YO-YO FACTORY

Multimedia for innovative teaching in control technology and automation

THE YO-YO FACTORY
The teaching material is in the form of a game in which students are guided through a series of learning tasks and are then asked to answer some questions for which they are awarded points by the program. Scores can be saved on student´s diskettes.
The yo-yos are manufactured automatically with the aid of control technology and automation.

PLC
PLC programming

At the end of the PLC section, the student is guided to a PLC simulator to practise PLC programming in realistic conditions.

INTERACTIVITY, MOVING PICTURES AND SOUND
Teaching in each of these areas is aided by video montages, moving pictures, stills, and sound.
There is a high level of interactivity; students answer questions by moving objects, starting a chain of events, etc.
The PLC simulator enables students to write programs and to see a sequence of moving pictures which shows them how their program
controls valves, sensors and cylinders.

EXPLORING THE FACTORY
Students are based in the factoryís control room, but QTVR (Quick Time Virtual Reality) technology allows them to move anywhere in the factory whenever they want. They can therefore visit various parts of the factory, for example to study looking around the factory for the answer.

AWARDING POINTS
The program is designed as a game in so far as students move forward and can only answer the questions once. Students begin by completing the information section and then answering the questions that accompany it. The information section may be repeated, but once the questions have been commenced, students must continue.
Points are recorded on screen and on students diskettes.
Students can exit the program whenever they want and continue with it another time without affecting their point score.
Once a student has completed the program, a certificate with their total point score is printed.

IN ENGLISH
The yo-yo factory is made in Sweden, but the language used is English. Students will come across a great deal of information in English in their careers, so the program aims to give them some prior knowledge of technical terminology.
The English terms appear on screen and are also spoken which is even more beneficial for students.

MULTIMEDIA GIVES TEACHING A new DIMENSION

The basic components of MICRO SUPPORT´s teaching concept
(Learning by Doing) are Study book, exercise book and laboratory
equipment.

MULTIMEDIA gives teaching a new dimension, making it 3-dimensional.

The YO-YO FACTORY is one of the cornerstones of our most recent
development project, CONTROL TECHNOLOGY 3000, which will begin in spring 2000.
It encompassed the following courses:
CONTROL TECHNOLOGY – basic level, ADVANCED CONTROL SYSTEMS and AUTOMATION UNITS.
